Business Policies

Working the Job

Interpreters work in teams of two for jobs lasting more than an hour. When using an interpreter you may speak to the foreign language speaker as if you were talking to one another directly. Speak at a clear and natural pace and volume. Keep sight lines to the interpreter clear and when talking in large groups please make sure to take turns. The interpreter will ask you if anything is unclear, otherwise assume all is well. You can help the interpreter to provide the most seamless communication access by providing any written materials in advance. Think of this as making sure that this new member of your team is on the same page as everyone else. Please provide the interpreter with key information such as times, locations, parking, names, and any necessary prior knowledge that will be relevant to their work on the day. All private interactions between interpreter and client are confidential as is any information conveyed during interpretation, your privacy is safe. The understandable exception being a public interpretation such as a play or a presenation. The interpreter works for both you and the Deaf consumer, and they will be with you every step of the way, to ensure communication at all times. Interpreters are unable to perform additional roles while working.
